Whyte looked to be in complete control of the bout and in the fourth round began flexing his muscles as he knocked Povetkin to the canvas twice.

The bell saved Povetkin who looked a little out on his feet as he walked to his corner, but in the heavyweight division one punch is all it takes.

As the two men came out for the fifth round, Povetkin turned Whyte’s lights out with a hellacious left uppercut that landed clean on the chin of Whyte and sent him falling hard backwards to the canvas.

The unbelievable one-punch finish throws a spanner into the heavyweight division with the 40-year-old Povetkin doubted heading into the fight as being too old and close to hanging up the gloves.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said after the fight a rematch clause was included in the contest and immediately after the bout Whyte was asking for the fight to be run again.

“Dillian wants the rematch. There is a rematch clause. We want to try and do that by the end of the year. There will be a rematch,” Hearn said.

“I’m pretty much lost for words.”

The knockout left boxing fans in disbelief and brings an end to Whyte’s 11-fight winning streak. The win launches Povetkin up the rankings, sitting behind only Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

40 & proud
